Different Blog Posts to understand and stop acid reflux (GERD & LPR).
Reflux and silent reflux can be extremely unpleasant. Most people think that the main cause of these discomforts lies in their diet. However, other factors can also play a role. One of them is sport.
Certain sports and exercises can worsen the symptoms of your reflux. Particularly sports that heavily engage your abdominal area, such as heavy weightlifting, abdominal sports, fast jogging, sprinting, or jump rope, can cause the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle that closes off the stomach) to relax. This, in turn, can lead to increased reflux.
So if you suffer from reflux, it's advisable to avoid such sports. However, this doesn't mean you have to completely give up on sports. It's about choosing the right exercises.
Healthier sports that don't excessively strain the abdominal area include hiking, walking, light jogging, cycling, yoga, or swimming. Strength training is also an option as long as you prefer sports using your body weight or light weights. Heavy weights and intense abdominal sports are rather counterproductive.
Sport can actually help you shed excess weight, which is particularly important if you suffer from reflux.
However, sport alone is not enough. Your diet also plays a crucial role. The best way to combat acid reflux or silent reflux is through a targeted dietary change. This means avoiding foods with a pH level of less than "5" during the acute phase. Only when your symptoms have improved you should consider foods with a pH level of "4" and higher.
NOTICE: Note that the pH level is measured in the undigested state of the food. Many guides refer to the pH level after digestion, which can lead to misinformation. To make it easier for you, I have compiled the pH values of over 180 foods in my e-book, the Reflux Formula.
For optimal workout results and to prevent reflux, you should not eat anything at least three hours before sport. A full stomach combined with physical exertion can push the stomach contents upward and lead to uncomfortable reflux.
So, sport is important and healthy, but you need to make the right choices to avoid worsening your symptoms. Be active, adjust your diet, and lead a comfortable life.
